My mood sinks when I see the lights on in the living room as I pull up to my house. I had purposely turned them off when I left so that I'd know if my mom was home or not when I returned since she parks her car in the garage and closes the door. She's home, and that means I'm potentially in for a lecture unless I can sneak past her and get to my bedroom first.

There's no chance of that. She's on the other side of the door when I open it, startling me so badly that my hand reaches up to grasp at my chest.

“What the hell, Mom?” I try to brush past her.

“Where have you been?” She follows me. “I've been texting you, and you haven't been responding.”

My treacherous mouth belts out the truth before I can think better of it, “I was at Vash's.”

That stops my mom dead in her tracks. Knowing that she'll follow me all the way to my bedroom now, I turn to face her. Might as well get this over with now. I've opened Pandora's box. I have to shove the monster back in before we'll be okay again.

“But I called him and canceled.” She looks puzzled.

I chew my bottom lip, realizing I've backed myself into a corner. There's no logical reason why I'd have his phone number, and I definitely shouldn't have known his address.

“I knew that he had cooked for us, and I felt bad.” I shrug, trying to jump past the issue of my ability to contact him. “We had made plans. It didn't make sense for him to have to spend Saturday alone.”

Oh geez. Just shut up already. Every time you open your mouth, you dig yourself a deeper hole while throwing the dirt on top of yourself at the same time.

My mom simply stands there with her mouth agape, blinking at me.

“So, how was your patient?” I fold my arms and rock back and forth, trying to look innocent.

“Oh no.” She waggles her finger at me. “You are not changing the subject.”

I sigh, my shoulders slumping. “I'm sorry. I just wanted to go swimming really badly.”

“Then you should have called up David and went with him.” She points towards the door, her voice rising several octaves. Her face is turning red from anger, and I know that this conversation likely won't have a favorable ending for me.

“We had already made plans with Vash.” I huff, averting my eyes.

“Yes, we,” she enunciates the word before gesturing between us. “You and I had plans with him. You had no business going over there alone. How did you even find his house?”

I cringe as she asks the question I've been avoiding.

“I...texted him and asked for his address.” I cower, knowing that the crap storm is about to erupt.

“How did you get his number?”

“I got it from your computer.” I close my eyes, visibly sinking away from her anger.

“Why?” She throws her hands up at me. But almost as soon as she does, all of the color drains from her face as the blatant realization hits her.
